Having a fireproof shell, tray, or glass to place your burning smudge on will ensure all ash and embers remain consolidated. Use the method of fire you are most comfortable with, this might be a match, candle, or lighter.

🌎Lighting the entire end of your smudge isn’t necessary - follow your intuition to match your purpose and intention. Let the material catch on fire, and as the flame goes out, the smoke will billow and the embers will continue to smoke.

Burning a small part of your smudge and saving it to use again is normal! Making sure your smudge is out completely is the most important part of it. You can stub the end out or extinguish it with water if needed. Leave it on the fireproof tray until you’re sure it is out completely and once it is cool you can store it in a dark, cool spot for later use.
